Kite Lake Campground serves as an important trailhead for climbing the peaks of Mounts Democrat, Lincoln, Cameron, and Bross, which are all over 14,000 feet in elevation. The Colorado Fourteeners Initiative provides up to date information about trail access to these mountains, so please check their website before planning your trip. If you are looking for a shorter hike, the Mosquito Range Heritage Initiative has prepared a brochure for the Lake Emma Trail, which also leaves from Kite Lake Trailhead.
The campground has five campsites and none are recommended for trailers. The camping season begins in May and continues until the road is snowed in. Facilities include toilets and tables but there is no water and no trash service at this campground. Please note that this area experiences heavy summer traffic and that there is a $3 parking fee.
Directions
From Fairplay travel North on Highway 9 to the town of Alma. Turn right onto County Road 8 (Buckskin Road) and travel 8 miles to the campground. Most 2WD vehicles can access the campground during the summer, but higher clearance is recommended.
