The 17,429-acre James Mark Jones State Wildlife Area spans a large portion of South Park north of Hartsel. Hunting and wildlife viewing are allowed in accordance with state regulations but no facilities are provided. This State Wildlife Area is closed to the public from January 1 to May 1 of each year. Please visit the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website for a map of designated parking areas. To reach the State Wildlife Area, take Highway 285 to County Road 15 (Elkhorn Road) and drive south for 8 miles to the James Mark Jones sign, then drive 1.8 miles west to the parking area.
