Railroad Heritage

May 2, 2020 Posted by Explore Park County

Discover the two railroads that once crossed South Park on this 3 day, 2 night journey into the past. Begin your trip in Como, former hub of the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad, where you can enjoy a meal at the Como Eating House & South Park Hotel. From there, explore the nearby Roundhouse and Depot before heading up the historic railroad grade to Boreas Pass. If you schedule your visit during Boreas Pass Railroad Day, you can even enjoy special tours of the historic sites along this route! Afterwards, take a side trip over to Jefferson to see the Jefferson Depot and grab a bite at the Hungry Moose Caboose before heading back to Como, where you can spend the night at the Roberts Cabin. The next day, head down to Lake George to explore the route of the Colorado Midland Railway in the Eleven Mile Canyon Recreation Area. Spend the day exploring the old railroad grade, fishing in the stream, or hiking along the Overlook Trail before settling by your campfire at Spillway Campground. On the last day, head west to Eleven Mile State Park to see where the railroad once crossed the plains before continuing on to Hartsel. Grab lunch at the Highline Cafe & Saloon while enjoying views of the Hartsel Depot before heading home.
