All major mountain passes in Park County are open! Plan your scenic drive, hiking adventure, or summer getaway with Explore Park County.
There’s something magical about driving through Colorado’s high mountain passes — the crisp air, the vast sky, and the promise of adventure around every bend. As of this week, we’re excited to announce that all major passes in Park County are officially open for the season! Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a scenic photography trip, or your next big hike, this is the perfect time to explore the roads less traveled.
Scenic Drives & Summer Road Trips
Park County’s open passes connect some of the most iconic and accessible high-altitude routes in the state. Whether you’re coming from Denver, Colorado Springs, or further out, here are just a few worth planning a trip around:
Kenosha Pass – Famous for its sweeping views during the fall “gold rush” when the aspen leaves turn the landscape gold. Great for a peaceful drive or a quick photo stop all year round.
Guanella Pass – A beautiful alpine route that leads you past cascading waterfalls, thick forests, and views of Mt. Bierstadt.
Weston & Mosquito Passes – Ideal for adventurous drivers and OHV enthusiasts with a taste for mining history.
Wilkerson Pass – One of the best panoramic overlooks of the South Park basin, perfect for a picnic and a short hike.
Boreas Pass – A seasonal favorite near Como, this gravel road follows an old railroad grade and offers stunning views, historic remnants, and aspen-lined curves — especially gorgeous in the fall but serene all summer long.
These routes aren’t just scenic; they also link to some of our favorite hidden gems — from quaint towns to epic trailheads.
What to Do Along the Way
Once you’re here, don’t just drive — get out and explore. The passes lead into everything from National Forest land to historic ghost towns and charming small-town shops. Make time to:
Hike a section of the Colorado Trail from Kenosha Pass.
Visit historic downtown Fairplay and the South Park City Museum.
Kayak at Jefferson Lake or Eleven Mile State Park.
Check out the Wilkerson Pass Visitor Center and walk its interpretive trail.
Stop by unique local businesses for coffee, crafts, and souvenirs.
